The American composer Ellen Reid's new work Earth Between Oceans races across the U.S. coastline. Combining choir, orchestra and field recordings, the piece is driven by the power of the four classical elements, leaving an unavoidable question lingering in the air: how much longer can this continue? Bryce Dessner, guitarist of The National and composer, has crafted concertos for the world's greatest soloists. His Trembling Earth, performed in London, Sydney and Berlin, was born for the uniquely poetic expressiveness of cellist Anastasia Kobekina. The lyrical, at times haunting dialogue between cello and orchestra is a touching tribute to Mother Nature's boundless resilience. Croatian composer Mirela Ivi?evi? hammers at our very notions of music with her art: it snarls, screams, curses and laments. Her latest work remains under wraps, but all signs suggest a shock treatment for ears well-seasoned in tradition. Head start at Restaurant Preludi at 18.00. Discussion of the forthcoming concert.
